Lunugamvehera National Park is otherwise also known as Block 5 of Yala National Park. With less tourists it’s the perfect environment to see wild animals. It was closed for a period of time due to the civil war, but is again open to the general public. Considerably smaller than Yala, it gets less recognition to its more popular neighbour, but there are still a great number of animals to spot in the park. Expect to see elephants, water buffalo, sambar deer, and if you’re lucky, leopards.
As with any other national park, book a safari tour before entering the park as it’s the only way to see it.
A safari to Lunugamvehera National Park is a quick day trip from Tangalle, Hambantota, and Tissamaharama. You can speak to your hotel to arrange for a safari tour to pick you up from your hotel.
