Hiriketiya Beach

Though May to October is considered ‘low season’ in the southern coast of Sri Lanka due to rough monsoon conditions, there’s one gem that’s just come to surface over the last few years for beach and surf enthusiasts: Hiriketiya Beach. Hirikatiya is a newly discovered paradise that backpackers have recently found, meaning new restaurants (with great food), guesthouses, and hotels. But why is this beach considered a gem to all that come? Because its horseshoe-shaped cove allows for swimming and surfing to be safe year round. You’ll still find strong waves coming through from May to October, so make sure you’re an intermediate- to expert-level surfer before attempting to ride the waves. For beginners, though, there are calmer waters near Hiriketiya beach that are a quick tuk ride away. You can hire a surf instructor from one of the many establishments by the beach.

Hiriketiya Beach is only a five-minute tuk tuk ride from the Dikwella bus stand. You can get a direct bus there from Tangalle, Hambantota, and Tissamaharama.
